Weekend Bars
The weekend bathroom-safety kit for your parent’s house.
Weekend Bars is reader-supported. If you buy through links on this page, we may earn a commission. Most grab bars are not covered by Medicare; confirm with their plan. This is not medical advice.
Who this kit is for
You are the adult child. The shower at your parent’s house is already tiled — ceramic or porcelain, grout lines, a stall that has been there for years. You have a Saturday. You can put a drill through that tile and into wood, or you will stop.
Two screw-in bars, same Amazon Basics family: 24″ on the long wall, 16″ vertical at the door they step through. Brushed stainless. Looks like hardware when you leave.
This page is the cart. Install a grab bar on tile is the drill. If a flange will not sit on a wood stud, this is the wrong cart. Open Shower Better, or wait.
Who should not buy this kit
Skip this page if any of these are true.
You cannot put a flange on a wood stud, and you will not step up to Moen plus SecureMount. Plastic anchors are not a mount. Toggle bolts are not a mount. The 500 lb number on the listing is a stud number. Miss the wood and it is gone.
You are a renter, or the house rule is no holes in the tile. Open Shower Renter. That kit is honest about suction and about a floor-to-ceiling pole. It is a different product.
The stall is a thin fiberglass surround. This SKU does not belong there. Open /guides/install-grab-bar-on-fiberglass.
You are treating a suction cup as the install. Suction is a balance hold on large, smooth, grout-free tile. Safe-er-Grip’s own limit is not full body weight, and it will not work on drywall, fiberglass, or marble. It does not finish a screw-in job.
What’s in the cart
Prices are Amazon.com street on Aug 31, 2026. The 16″ is a real size on the same listing. No featured offer was captured for that size, so the price stays off this page until it is verified. Do not buy two 24″ bars.
| Item | ASIN | Size | Price | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Basics grab bar, 1.25″ diameter, GBAR-125-24 | B079LKHXTV | 24 Inch | $24.56 (Aug 31, 2026) | Horizontal bar in the stall |
| Amazon Basics grab bar, same family, same listing | B079LKHXTV — pick Size: 16 Inch | 16 Inch | UNVERIFIED | Vertical at the entry. Same finish. Not a 24″ turned on end |
| #10 or #12 stainless wood screws, 2–2½” | Hardware store | — | a few dollars | The included Phillips heads strip. Buy these Friday. |
| Painter’s tape | Hardware store | — | a few dollars | Hand-height marks; keeps the bit from skating on glaze |
| Silicone bathroom caulk | Hardware store | — | a tube | Optional behind the decorative caps so water does not sit in the flange |
Screws, tape, and silicone are not Amazon-only. Use what you have. Otherwise the hardware aisle is faster than another box.
Listing copy you will see and we will not repeat as a home-install claim: “ADA Compliant.” “500LBs Capacity” means when properly installed in a wall stud or another secure mounting surface. This kit only uses the stud.
What this kit assumes
Ceramic or porcelain tile over drywall or cement board. Not paint. Not a thin fiberglass tub surround.
Wood stud at least at one flange per bar, preferably both. A 16″ vertical can often sit on a single stud the full height of the bar. The 24″ horizontal is the one that lies.
You have Install a grab bar on tile open on a phone in the stall. Start the horizontal bar around 33–36 inches off the finished floor, then move the tape to where their hand actually is. That range is a starting mark, not a code inspection.
Drill on rotary, not hammer. 1/8″ masonry or diamond bit. Stud finder, level, glasses. Porcelain is harder than glazed ceramic; if you do not know which they have, diamond bit, slow speed.
Tug-test each bar yourself — one firm pull, not a hang — before anyone else uses it.
The 24″ vs 16″ OC problem in plain English
Studs in a house wall are usually 16 inches on center: sixteen inches from the center of one stud to the center of the next. A 24″ grab bar has flanges about two feet apart. Those two facts do not line up. One end of a 24″ bar can sit on wood while the other end sits on hollow tile-over-board. That is the usual Saturday surprise, not a rare miss.
If the 24″ cannot land on wood at the flanges, do not force this kit. Do not add a toggle. Do not sink a drywall screw and caulk it. Move the bar until a flange hits a stud, turn the job into two verticals on two different studs, or leave Entry in the box and open Better.
Order of work Saturday
Friday. Order 24″ and 16″ from the same listing. Confirm the second bar is Size: 16 Inch. Buy screws, tape, and silicone. Read the tile guide once.
Saturday morning, dry. Have them stand in the stall. Shoes off, towel on the floor. Tape a starting mark at 33–36 inches for the horizontal, then move it to their hand. Tape the entry wall for the 16″ on the side they use to step in.
Find studs. Tile fools cheap finders. Mark both edges, then the center. Confirm both ends of the 24″. If you cannot get wood under those flanges, stop. Do not drill yet.
Install the 24″ first. It is the long wall, the one that teaches you the tile. Tape the glaze, no hammer mode, 1/8″ pilots into the stud, better screws, caps on, optional silicone behind the cover. One firm pull.
Then the 16″ at the entry. Same finish, same rules, usually an easier stud because it can ride one piece of wood top to bottom. One firm pull.
Leave it. Recheck the screws in a month. If something loosens, it is a screw problem, not a bar that wore out.
When to abandon Entry and open Better
Abandon this cart as soon as you know a 24″ flange will sit on hollow wall and you still want a bar there.
Shower Better is the Moen Home Care 24″ (8724) plus two SecureMount anchors (SMA1005CH). The anchor spec is 300 lb, in approved substrates, with 3½” of space behind the wall. That is not the 500 lb stud number. Print 300. The anchors are Moen’s hole pattern. Do not force them under an Amazon Basics flange.
Better is still a Saturday: a 1¼” hole through tile per off-stud flange. Bigger bit, same weekend. Honest path when Entry’s geometry fails.
If you cannot drill at all, do not “upgrade” to Better. Open Shower Renter.
Buy: 24″ Amazon Basics, B079LKHXTV at $24.56 (Aug 31, 2026), and the same listing with Size: 16 Inch — confirm the selector, price unverified, do not buy two 24″s.
